Passion Fruit
The round fruit can be one to three inches in size with a hard, smooth, and wax coated rind.
The colors range from dark purple to light yellow or orange. This amazon fruit itself is composed of
many juice and pulp filled pockets, as well as hundreds of small black seeds. The distinctive
flavor is alluring, robust, and very similar to tart guava. The yellow varieties are normally
larger fruit than the purple types. However, the purple passion fruit varieties are generally less acid,
with a fuller bouquet, and a somewhat higher juice concentration.
Uses:
- In Australia, the tropical fruit is available fresh and canned. Along with being added
to fruit salads, passion fruit is commonly used in desserts such as cheesecake, and vanilla
slice. It is also used to flavor soft drinks such as passiona and cordials.
- In Puerto Rico, the passion fruit is widely thought to lower blood pressure.
- In Brazil passion fruit mousse is a typical dessert, and passion fruit seeds are commonly
used to decorate the tops cakes.
- In the Dominican Republic it is often used as an ingredient in a fruit drink containing
filtered passion fruit juice concentrate, sugar and water. It is also eaten fresh and used to flavor
things from hard candies to frozen treats.
- In Indonesia it is eaten directly raw as a fruit. Nevertheless, it is common to filter
the passion fruit for its juice and prepare it with sugar to make some type of syrup. It is
then mixed with water and ice to be drunk.
- Passion fruit juice concentrate or syrup is a vital ingredient of some cocktails, chiefly the hurricane.
