Mangosteen Fact Sheet

Mangosteen Fruit Facts

Mangosteen

What is it?

The mangosteen fruit, also known as "the Queen of Fruits", originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas. It was first domesticated in Thailand or Burma but is currently widely cultivated in Kampuchea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. Ripeness is gauged by color development and slight softening of the fruit. The mangosteen is harvested when fully mature as they do not continue to ripen after picking. The mangosteen's exterior is round, dark-purple to red-purple and smooth. It is approximately 1-1/2 to 3 inches in diameter. The rind is 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick and purplish-white on the inside. There are 4 to 8 triangular segments of white, juicy, soft flesh. The fruit may or may not contain seeds.
